Welcome to the ESL Cultural Pages

We hope that you will use this site as a resource for learning more about the cultures and experiences of your ESL students. Please read about the development of the website or click here to get started.

Background

In the spring and fall of 2007, junior high and high school ESL students shared information about their cultural backgrounds and native countries. The information in these pages represents their individual perspectives, which have been shaped by their unique experiences. We don't intend to generalize what life is like for all immigrant students, but we would like to provide a glimpse into the lives of our ESL students in their native countries and their new home in the United States.

About the Site

There are webpages for 12 countries. Each webpage has 7 topics: Welcome; Our Journey; Culture; Education; Social Rules; Misperceptions; and Just for Fun. You can navigate to these topics by clicking on the links on the left-hand side of each page. You can switch to another country by clicking on the flags at the bottom of each page. At the top of each page you will find links to the home page; the district globalization page; ESL resources from NYSED; the list of countries; and a way to contact us. Most of the information on these pages comes directly from the students' personal experiences. However, statistics and other specific figures come from the World Factbook and the Yearbook of Immigration Statistics.
