Filipino Social Rules

Body Language

Body language in Philippines is not that different from the U.S.  However, we do leave more space between each other when we’re talking to another person.  Also, boys and girls are expected not to have physical contact in public.  Students cannot have a romantic relationship.  If they are caught, they could be expelled from school.

Age

Filipinos have more respect for older people.  We have a special form of address, “po”, that we use when we speak to our elders. Older neighbors take responsibility for other people’s children, and children cannot say anything disrespectful or bad to them. Elders live with younger family members.  Depending on the position of the family, they may go to live with their daughters or sons.

Gender

Young boys and girls can play together.  Due to space issues, brothers and sisters sometimes must sleep in the same rooms.  As mentioned previously, boys and females cannot have a romantic relationship in school.  There are very serious consequences for disobeying these rules.
